Now that it's time to pack up for your move, you're realizing how much "stuff" you've collected over the years. If you're not going to be able to take everything with you, you'll need to devise a plan that will help you filter through the "stuff" and help you downsize your collection. Here are three steps you should take that will help you get rid of the things you no longer need.
Rent a Dumpster
When planning a clean-up day for moving purposes, the first thing you need to do is rent a dumpster. Seeing the dumpster in your yard will get you motivated to begin the clean-up. It will also give you the space you need to get rid of the things you don't need anymore.
Schedule a Charitable Pickup
Once you have the dumpster in your yard, and you've planned a day for the clean-up, you need to call and schedule a charitable pickup. Don't wait until you're done or you might delay the cleanup efforts. Scheduling the pickup in advance will help you stay on target for your completion date.
Divide and Conquer
If you've lived in your home for a number of years, you may have collected a considerable amount of unnecessary stuff. In order to downsize before the move, you need to detach yourself from the unnecessary things you've collected over the years. This can be accomplished through a process of dividing your possessions into four categories.
This pile will be comprised of the things you plan on keeping. This should include collectibles such as family treasures and other items that hold intrinsic value.
This pile will include all the things you want to keep, but don't need to take with you - such as collectibles or children's keepsakes.
The trash pile should contain all the broken and no longer usable items you've held on to over the years. When it comes to clothing, if you can't remember the last time you wore it – but it's still in good condition – place it in the donate category. If it's damaged beyond repair, toss it in the trash pile. This will prevent you from holding on to clothing that you think you want to keep because you think you may wear it later.
Your donate pile should contain everything that you will no longer use – but others could still get use out of it. The purpose of the donate pile is to help you downsize the number of "just because" items you've hung on to over the years.
Now that it's time to prepare for your move, you need to make sure you aren't spending time packing things that you'll never use. The information provided here will help you get your home in order before you move. Once you've cleared out all the items you don't want to bring with you, it's time to hire a moving company, such as J & L Moving & Storage.
